La intertextualidad moderna y la posmoderna

Abstract

Modern and postmodern intertextuality. Intertextuality holds a special place among literary devices and acquires a distinct meaning according to the principles of the epoch which makes use of it. From a modern perspective, the intertextual relation is established through the creation of something new, while in the postmodern view it represents the revival of something old. This difference can be described on three levels: the object, the way in which the intertextual relation is developed and the function of the intertextual links. Different conceptions of the text and the relation between texts are involved. One conceives the literary work as a text whose qualities can be found within itself and the other sees the text as an intertext whose qualities are a function of its relation with other literary works. On the other hand, the readings of the texts also differ markedly: the modernists only expect the reader to accept or reject the proposed link, while the postmodernists demand a high degree of competence in order to define the significance of the link itself.
