La problemática del Ethos

Abstract

Curiously, the recovery of the interest in the problematic of the ethos was not introduced initially in the framework of Rhetoric studies, but in the field of discourse linguistics. As far as France is concerned, it was not until 1984 that the notion of ethos was explored in pragmatic or discursive research: in the work of O. Ducrot, who linked it to a reflection on subjectivity in enunciation (Ducrot, 1984:201) and in my own work, in which I have formulated a theory in the frame of discourse analysis (Maingueneau, 1984, 1987, 1999). In 1996, I published in this academic journal, Version, a brief synthesis, the first one, on the problematic of ethos (Maingueneau, 1996); although this one has not been modified in its general lines, it has experienced a series of developments in different aspects. That is why, it seemed to be useful to submit another presentation, that takes into account different theoretical contributions and offers more varied examples.
