Abstract

Media convergence is one of the most powerful contemporary fetishes of both popular and academic thought. This paper details some examples of that fetish alongside alternative visions. We are especially concerned to counter the discourse of newness that blinds many participants to the history and material impact of convergence. We begin with the core claims of media convergence for democracy before seeking to establish this counter-history.
