Abstract

This essay deals with the variety depicted in Traversée de la mangrove by Marise Conde. The creole authoress writes in Paris, from the other side of the ocean, about the fragility and heteroclite of Guadeloupe, her native island. Inside the text, the interior voices of guadaloupans talk about their own creolity, their blended blods, languages and destinies. They want to leave the island behind, as a unique way of stopping the intense and anguishing acculturation they continuously experience. They are like as each mangrove branch, growing roots into the swamp's salty mud. Precariety, mirage and incertitude constitute the islanders identity, a continuous collocating and dislocating of self, as in the middle of a weakened reality.
